The Ghana Armed Forces has released the identity of the soldier killed in a land dispute shooting.

On April 30, 2024, Lance Corporal Danso Michael of the Ghana Armed Forces was shot and killed in a land dispute shooting at Millennium City, Kasoa, in the Central Region.

The incident occurred when L/Cpl Danso Michael and two of his colleagues, L/Cpl Omar Abdul Rahman and L/Cpl Ametus Matthew, visited a disputed land site after being informed that individuals were working on it.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, when the soldiers intervened to halt the ongoing work, the acclaimed owner of the land, Benlord Ababio, arrived with two others believed to be land guards and confronted them. During the confrontation, they started firing at L/Cpl Danso Michael, who was fatally hit. The Kasoa police arrested the suspect in the fatal shooting at Millennium City.

L/Cpl Danso Michael sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, where he was later pronounced dead. His body was retrieved from the vehicle and transported to the 37 Military Hospital morgue.

The Ghana Armed Forces condemned the unprovoked attack and expressed their deepest sympathies to the family and colleagues of the soldier killed in the land dispute. They urged citizens to seek peaceful and lawful means to resolve land disputes and refrain from violence.

Why this matters: The tragic incident highlights the ongoing land disputes in the Kasoa area and the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent such violent confrontations. It also underscores the risks faced by security personnel in the line of duty.

The Ghana Armed Forces have initiated an investigation into the incident and are collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to conduct further inquiries. The police have assured the public that they will keep them informed of any developments as the investigation continues. "The leadership of the Ghana Police Service is in touch with the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces as the investigation continues," the police stated.
