Angola Bids to Host 2027 World Junior Swimming Championships

Angola has submitted a candidature to host the 2027 World Junior Swimming Championships, with the proposal receiving initial approval from three international federations. Minister of Youth and Sports Rui Falcão made the announcement on Friday in Luanda, emphasizing the need for additional infrastructure and logistical support to ensure a high-quality event.

Why this matters: Angola's bid to host the World Junior Swimming Championships has broader implications for the development of aquatic sports in Africa, and could pave the way for more international sporting events on the continent. If successful, it could also lead to increased investment in sports infrastructure and tourism in Angola and beyond.

The World Junior Swimming Championships is expected to attract at least 200 nations, a significant increase from the 42 countries currently participating in the African Championships being held in Luanda. "In principle, the candidature has been accepted. We have three international federations here that have given their approval. We will continue to work to fulfill the specifications," stated Minister Falcão.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) is scheduled to hold a meeting in Luanda to discuss Angola's bid. Husain Al Musallam, President of FINA, has expressed support for Angola's potential to become the first African country to host the prestigious event. The proposal was initially made to Al Musallam and Sam Ramsany, Vice President of FINA and President of the African Swimming Confederation, during their visit to Luanda for the 16th edition of the African Swimming Championships.

Minister Falcão acknowledged the current state of swimming in Angola, stating, "We are happy that the African Championships are taking place. We have to keep in mind that swimming is dominated by white African countries and fortunately, we have South Africa to counterbalance this. Angola is entering with certain humility. We've won a competition here and there."

Sam Ramsany, deputy chairperson of FINA and president of the African Swimming Confederation, emphasized the importance of swimming in Africa, a continent that often prioritizes football over aquatic sports. Ramsany highlighted that swimming has several vital components that contribute to saving lives.

Angola's bid to host the 2027 World Junior Swimming Championships marks a significant step forward for the country and the African continent. With the support of international federations and the commitment to improve infrastructure, Angola aims to showcase its ability to host a world-class sporting event. The upcoming FINA meeting in Luanda will be crucial in determining the next steps for Angola's candidature.
