Toronto Police Investigate Suspected Hate-Motivated Arsons Targeting Signs

The Toronto Police Service is investigating two suspected hate-motivated arsons that occurred in the Bayview Avenue area on April 26 and 28, Both incidents involved signs being set on fire, with one of the signs located on the property of a synagogue.

Why this matters: These incidents highlight the growing concern of hate crimes in urban areas, which can have a profound impact on community safety and social cohesion. If left unchecked, such incidents can embolden perpetrators and create a climate of fear and intimidation for marginalized groups.

The first incident took place on April 26 at approximately 8:40 a.m. in the Bayview Avenue and Ruddington Drive area. A person approached a sign affixed to the ground, lit it on fire, and fled the area. The second incident occurred on April 28 at around 4:15 a.m. in the Bayview Avenue and Burleigh Heights Drive area. A silver or grey coloured vehicle approached a sign affixed to the ground, lit it on fire, and fled southbound.

The arsons are being investigated as suspected hate-motivated incidents based on the messaging on the signs. One of the targeted signs was placed on the property of a synagogue. Police believe that the two incidents are related.

When suspected hate-motivated offences are reported to police, the investigation could be led by a Divisional investigator with the support of the Hate Crime Unit (HCU), or in some cases, will be investigated exclusively by the HCU. If it is alleged a criminal offence was committed and it is believed to have been motivated by bias, prejudice or hate, the officer-in-charge may consult with the Crown. If a person is charged and convicted of the offence, the Judge will take into consideration hate as an aggravating factor when imposing a sentence.

The Toronto Police are asking anyone with information about these incidents to contact them at 416-808-3500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477). A video related to the investigation is also available for viewing.
