Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Urged to Face EFCC Charges by Ex-Benue Governor Ortom

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged N80.2 billion fraud, has been advised by former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom to emerge from concealment and confront the charges. During his 63rd birthday thanksgiving service in Makurdi, Benue State, Ortom stated that it is improper for Bello to conceal himself when called upon by the anti-graft agency to clarify issues bordering on his tenure as governor.

Ortom urged Bello to appear before the EFCC, as they are human beings doing their work, and the laws are there. "I have tried to reach Bello but could not, and I want him to know that wherever he is, he should go before the EFCC," Ortom said. He warned that Bello's continued evasion of the charges would bring disgrace to former governors and escalate the seriousness of the situation.

The EFCC had filed charges against Bello and declared him wanted after he failed to show up for arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Nigerian Immigration Service also placed Bello on a watchlist, ordering his arrest. Shortly after leaving office in May 2023, Ortom himself was invited by the EFCC and questioned, but was released after the interrogation.

Why this matters: The case against former Governor Yahaya Bello highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian anti-corruption agencies to hold public officials accountable for alleged financial misconduct during their tenures. The advice from former Governor Ortom underscores the importance of facing legal charges and cooperating with investigations to maintain the integrity of public office.

Ortom also addressed his former appointees during the thanksgiving service, advising them to always present themselves and provide an account of their stewardship when called upon. He expressed gratitude to God for His mercies over his life and family, and called on Benue youths to refrain from insulting elders on social media and instead use the internet to add value to their lives and bring development to the state. "I left office a stronger Christian," Ortom said, emphasizing his commitment to continue worshiping in the house of God.
