Former Pakistani PM Adviser Sues Government, Alleging ISI Behind UK Acid Attack

Shahzad Akbar, a senior adviser to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has launched legal action against the Pakistani government, claiming that the country's intelligence agency, the ISI, was behind an acid attack against him at his home in Hertfordshire, UK on November 26, 2023. The attack caused acid burns that required hospital treatment and left permanent scars.

Akbar, who had fled Pakistan after leading efforts to combat corruption, believes the attack was a message that he is not safe, even abroad, as he has been campaigning against corruption by Pakistani politicians and government officials. He was fortunate not to lose his sight in the attack, which took place in front of his young daughter.

The legal letter from Akbar's lawyers also accuses the ISI and Pakistan army officers of being responsible for an attempt to assassinate Imran Khan in November 2022 and the murder of investigative journalist Arshad Sharif, who often worked closely with Akbar and had also fled Pakistan.

According to Akbar, his brother was briefly abducted from his home in Islamabad by men dressed as police. The ISI agents allegedly told Akbar that the only way to free his brother would be to return to Pakistan and give evidence against Khan, who is currently in prison facing charges. Akbar refused and has now filed a legal case to hold those responsible for the attack accountable.

Why this matters: This case highlights the alleged involvement of Pakistan's intelligence agency in targeting critics and opposition figures, even beyond the country's borders. It also underscores the risks faced by those who speak out against corruption and abuse of power in Pakistan.

Akbar hopes his legal action will bring justice and accountability for the acid attack, as well as the other alleged crimes committed by the ISI and Pakistan army officers. "I have launched this legal action to hold those responsible for the attack accountable and to send a message that such intimidation tactics will not be tolerated," Akbar stated. The Pakistani government has not yet responded to the allegations.
